How to easily plan a boujie event in Edmonton
Being a professional DJ in the festival city for the past 10 years means we’ve experienced a lot of events! You don’t have to be an expert event planner to easily plan a special event in Edmonton. We’ve hosted a lot of our own parties, meet-ups, pop-up events and know a few things that will save you time and effort when you’re planning your next event in Edmonton.
With many new restaurants and venues opening up in downtown Edmonton, there are lots of location options for your upcoming event! Simply call up your favourite dining spot and ask if they offer private events. A few of our favourite local businesses offer the option to book a private section or room in their space to host your own event:
- The Common and 99ten (pictured above)- normally a nightclub - but did you know you can rent these chic venues for special events? Eat a private dinner then stay to dance the night away. I know, it’s too good to be true.
- Drunken Ox Sober Cat (DOSC) - known for being a cute spot to grab coffee or bite in downtown Edmonton. Also available to book for your upcoming holiday party!
- ATB Branch for Arts & Culture - located on the main floor of the CKUA Building on Jasper Ave - fun fact - ATB arts & culture clients are allowed to borrow their downtown arts office as a space for a special event on an evening or weekend - free of charge!
- Little Brick Cafe - nestled in the hill of Riverdale and frequented by the yummy mummies of central Edmonton, this cafe is open to the public for breakfast and lunch and available for private rental by night.
If you need a caterer and want to step it up a notch then we recommend Whisk Catering - they specialize in creating custom menus for intimate affairs. We’ve sampled a lot of different caterers over the years and trust us - Whisk has been the tastiest food and offer the best service too! Hire them for an at home event or at a venue (drop-off or full service available). HOT TIP: When booking your venue, make sure to ask if they allow outside caterers before confirming the booking.
Most of the venue’s we mentioned above come equipped with a full kitchen and menu to pick and choose from for your guests. Often the lower cost option is to pre-select menu items and order food for a family style meal, offer wine on the table or a couple of drink tickets each to get guests started with libations. Add a custom cocktail to your menu to keep things simple for the venue and delight your guests! A Negroni, French 75 or Old Fashion usually work well, they are easy for the venue to make in large batches and most people like them.
Look no further - we’ve got your holiday music needs on lock-down. Having a live DJ at your event will ensure a seamless transition from cocktail hour to dinner music to dance! AND a DJ will work with your MC to keep the speeches running on time, the DJ bullies in line and party people having a good time! A few less things to worry about so the event planner can enjoy the party too!
If hiring a live DJ is out of your budget, we offer custom playlist creation for a fraction of the price. Only downside is it doesn’t come with our smiling faces and emotional support the day of the event ;)
Partner with local businesses to make a unique gift for your guests. A good party favor and/or centerpiece will serve as a memorable take-away for your guests. Think outside the box and approach local businesses that you or your friends/colleagues/boss really like and ask them if they have a custom product that you can use as a party favor! Depending on the business, a lot of them will wave any extra fees for the opportunity to get their brand in front of your guests in a unique way. We have a little intel that will help get your ideas going - these are some Edmonton born businesses we’ve seen provide cute & unique take-aways at special events:
You’ll want to contact places soon to make sure they have enough time to collaborate on your request!
Once you have all of the beautiful details ironed out it’s time to consider how you’ll capture the excitement so the memories can live on. We know a lot of Edmonton based photographers you could work with, we highly recommend Magic Hour and Semi Vujcic.
If hiring a photographer is out of budget - we have a low cost option for you - an automated photobooth with silly props. This can be set up in a corner of the room and left open for people to pop-in and take photos when they’re feeling it! Feel free to reach out to us for the price to have us install and set this up at your event!
